# Brand Mentions

> Brand mentions are references to a brand on third-party sites — in forums, communities, trade media, comparisons. AI systems weight them even without a link, because the brand image emerges from the sum of all sources.

Brand mentions are references to a brand outside its own website: in trade media, forums, communities, comparison articles, reviews and videos. For AI systems they are a central signal — regardless of whether the mention is linked. The reason fits in one sentence: "Brands matter more than websites." The AI system does not care whether information about a brand comes from its website or from third parties. What matters is a consistent brand image.

## How do brand mentions affect AI systems?

In two ways. Mentions enter [model knowledge](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/model-knowledge/) through the training data: forums, trade media and Wikipedia are weighty sources, and a brand that is mentioned there often and consistently in connection with a topic becomes a known [entity](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/entity/). Mentions enter [grounding](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/grounding/) through web search: for brand-neutral questions ("Which providers are there for …?"), AI systems predominantly cite third-party sites — comparisons, listicles, forums — and whoever is mentioned there makes it into the answer.

Users can get answers about a brand without ever having visited its website. Conversely, a brand with an excellent website can be missing from brand-neutral answers if nobody else writes about it.

## Why do brand mentions matter for AI visibility?

Because they make the difference between a website and a brand. A website can be cited for questions it answers itself. A brand, however, is mentioned above all when others mention it — and those are precisely the questions in which purchasing decisions are made.

## What does this mean for your website?

Build mentions where AI systems get their evidence: [Digital PR](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/digital-pr/) in trade publications, presence in [listicles](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/listicles/) and comparisons, authentic [community presence](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/community-presence/), entries on [review platforms](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/review-platforms/), your own videos on YouTube. Make sure all these sources describe your brand in the same way ([consistent brand description](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/consistent-brand-description/)). And use a source analysis to measure which third-party sites are actually cited in your field.
