# Community presence (Reddit & forums)

> Community presence means authentic recommendations of a brand in relevant threads on Reddit and in specialist forums. AI systems cite such sources often — self-promotion does not help, nuanced, honest mentions do.

Community presence is the visibility of a brand in conversations between real users: in Reddit threads, in specialist forums, in communities where people ask for experiences and recommendations. For AI systems, these conversations are an important source — in training, because forums supply the conversational tone, and in grounding, because recommendation questions are answered there with nuance. Authenticity is decisive: only honest, differentiated mentions help.

## How does community presence affect AI answers?

If a user asks "What experiences are there with X?" or "Which provider would you recommend?", the system looks for sources where exactly such questions have already been answered. Forum threads deliver the format: question, several answers with names and reasons, disagreement, caveats. The model adopts brands from them along with their assessment. At the SISTRIX Meetup in September 2026, Chrissy Kunisch (ONE Beyond Search) cited a roughly four times higher chance of being cited with active community presence.

The conversational tone has a double effect: a brand that is recommended in forums with caveats ("good for small projects, expensive for large ones") is adopted into the answer with exactly that nuance — that is the [sentiment](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/sentiment/).

## Why does community presence matter for AI visibility?

Because experience and recommendation questions are the questions with the greatest influence on the purchasing decision — and because a brand's own website is not cited for them. Anyone missing from the threads in which their service is discussed is missing from the answers that emerge from them.

## What does this mean for your website?

Identify the forums and subreddits where your target group asks questions, and "listen in": which questions are asked, which terms are used, which competitors are mentioned? That yields fan-out queries and Q&A headings for your own pages. Take part openly and with substance — as a recognisable representative, without advertising language. No self-promotion, no fake recommendations: both are recognised and turn the sentiment.
