# Listicles

> Listicles are ‘best of’ and comparison articles on third-party sites (‘The 10 best providers for …’). AI systems cite them especially often for provider and comparison questions — presence there is a direct lever for mentions.

Listicles are articles that present a topic as a list — "The 10 best providers for industrial pumps", "7 dental insurance plans compared". For AI systems they are a preferred source for provider, comparison and recommendation questions, because they deliver the answer already in the form being sought. Whoever appears in the listicles a system cites is mentioned; whoever is missing is missing.

## How do listicles affect AI answers?

For a question like "Which providers are worth considering for X?", the system looks for sources that name and compare several providers. Listicles do exactly that. In [re-ranking](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/re-ranking/), every list entry delivers a clean chunk with name, description and criteria. The model adopts the names and cites the listicle as its source. Research reported by Search Engine Land shows listicles, together with trade articles and product pages, as the formats that receive the most AI citations.

There is one limitation: self-promotional listicles — providers that publish a "best of" list on their own website with themselves in first place — are now recognised and devalued by Google, as documented by almcorp for 2026, among others. The lever lies in other people's lists, not in your own.

## Why do listicles matter for AI visibility?

Because they decide the questions that come just before the purchasing decision: recommendation, comparison, selection. A brand's own website is hardly ever cited for these questions. A place in the three listicles that an AI system draws on for a subject area is therefore worth more than many optimisations on your own service page.

## What does this mean for your website?

Carry out a [source analysis](https://www.codaai.ai/en/knowledge/geo-glossary/source-analysis/): which listicles and comparison articles does the AI cite for your comparison questions? Work on getting into exactly these lists — with a consistent brand description, verifiable details and existing reviews. To be clear about the distinction: comparison articles you publish yourself are specialist content, not listicle presence.
