AI writes the shortlist. Who is on it?

We put the questions buyers use to find software and IT partners to five AI systems — about 100 software vendors, system integrators and IT service providers from the German-speaking market. Of all industries, the one that builds the technology rarely appears in the answers.

Key findings

Buyers ask the AI first — and most IT companies are not in the answer.

Where does your segment stand?

Share of AI answers that name the company asked about

  • Software vendors · 40 companies
    33% 2 of 40 never named
  • IT security & cloud · 20 companies
    25% 2 of 20 never named
  • System integrators & IT services · 40 companies
    6% 16 of 40 never named
4 in 5

AI answers do not name the company asked about

For typical buyer questions the IT or software company appears in only one answer in five (766 of 3,744).

Base: 3,744 AI answers

46%

of answers name a competitor instead

The company is missing and the AI names a competitor outright. That firm is then on the customer’s shortlist.

Base: 3,744 AI answers

59%

of the competitors recommended are mid-sized firms

It is usually not a corporation. For questions about system integrators it is 72%. Size alone does not decide.

Base: 5,814 competitor mentions

Abstract

Summary

Software and IT partners are increasingly shortlisted through AI assistants — long before a vendor is contacted. This analysis measures whether IT and software companies appear there. For each company we put eight buyer questions without the company name to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, all with web search, and evaluated the answers systematically: is the company named? Who is named instead? Which sources does the AI rely on?

The result: the company is named in only 20.5% of the 3,744 answers. Software vendors reach 32.6%, system integrators and IT service providers only 5.9% — 16 of 40 do not appear in a single answer. In 46.4% of answers the AI names a competitor instead, usually a mid-sized firm. And the company's own website is a source in only one answer in ten.

Results

Four findings for the IT industry

20.5%

of answers name the company asked about

766 of 3,744 answers. In four out of five answers the company does not appear — and no statistic tells it so.

20 of 100

companies are not named in a single answer

Not in the market overview, not in the use case, not in the comparison. Among system integrators and IT service providers this applies to 16 of 40.

46.4%

of answers name a competitor instead of the company

1,737 answers. For 84 of the 100 companies, the company is missing from most answers while competitors are named.

9.7%

of answers rely on the company’s own website

The AI cites the company’s website in only 365 answers. 26 companies are never cited with their own website — every second system integrator.

Where the company is named, its average position is 2.2; in 42.0% of those cases it takes first place. Questions about a concrete use case name the company less often (17%) than the market overview of its category (28%).

The five systems

No AI system is the exception

The same 800 questions, five systems, all with web search. The differences between systems are small — the difference between segments is large.

ChatGPT 28% 5% 25% 18.4%
Claude 38% 5% 30% 23.3%
Gemini 33% 9% — 22.1%
Perplexity 34% 5% 26% 21.0%
Google AI Mode 30% 6% 20% 18.1%

Share of answers naming the company asked about. Gemini answered only 17 times for security and cloud; that value is not reliable (—).

Comparison

Of all industries, the one that builds the technology

To compare with the KI-Blindtest Mittelstand 2026, the IT figures are counted the same way: ChatGPT and Google only, per question. IT does worse — almost entirely because of system integrators and IT service providers.

MetricMittelstand (449)IT total (100)Software (40)Integrator/IT services (40)Security/cloud (20)
Questions without a mention 55% 74% 59% 92% 66%

ChatGPT never names the company 40% 48% 30% 78% 25%
Website never cited as a source 39% 40% 25% 65% 20%

Only partly comparable: in the Mittelstand study (June/July 2026) ChatGPT answered without web search and Google AI Overviews were measured; here all systems search the web and Google AI Mode was measured. The direction is robust; read the gap as an order of magnitude only.

Who gets recommended

Usually a mid-sized firm, not a corporation

Who the AI names instead of the company: share of competitors named, by size, based on 5,814 mentions. A corporation has more than 1,000 employees or belongs to a group.

What the AI relies on

Share of all 21,508 source citations from 3,499 answers with sources (6,446 different websites). Rounded.

Vendor websites around 70%
Comparison portals, directories, best-of lists around 13%

Agency and advice blogs 4%
Public bodies, associations, institutes 3%

Seven in ten sources are vendor websites — but only in one answer in ten is it the website of the company asked about. In 29% of answers with sources, the website of a named competitor serves as evidence, often its guide or best-of list. Comparison portals appear in at least one answer in three.

From the measurement

Two cases — anonymised

Snapshots from 5 November 2026. Company and competitor names are omitted for fairness.

System integrator · question from a head of IT

2 questions · 5 AI systems · 10 answers

In nine of ten answers the same mid-sized system integrator is recommended, the two best-known corporations together in three. All five systems cite a page of this integrator that answers exactly this question: target group, size, price per workstation, response time, region, questions and answers.

Software · question about GDPR-compliant email marketing software

1 question · 5 AI systems · 5 answers

All five answers pick up the data protection argument: server location, data processing agreement, double opt-in. And all five name the same vendor, which has its own concrete page on exactly this point. Several systems use exactly that page as evidence.

Methodology

  1. 1

    Companies

100 companies with 20 to 1,000 employees: 40 software vendors, 40 system integrators and IT service providers, 20 IT security and cloud providers. 91 are based in Germany, 6 in Switzerland, 3 in Austria.

  2. 2

    Selection

From association, label and partner directories (for example "Software Made in Germany", the German IT SME association BITMi, the BSI list of qualified incident-response providers, TeleTrusT, eco, system-integrator partner networks) — deliberately not from comparison portals or AI answers. Excluded: subsidiaries of corporations, customers and prospects of CodaAI. Not a random sample.

  3. 3

    Questions

Eight questions per company without the company name, phrased the way buyers ask: two on the market overview, four on the use case, two comparing competitors. Derived from each company's website and market and checked before measuring. 800 questions in total, in German.

  4. 4

    Systems

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, all with web search, in German, model versions as of November 2026. One answer per question and system. Measured on 5 and 6 November 2026.

  5. 5

    Evaluation

We recorded whether the company is named (including common short forms), in which position, which competitors from its peer set are named, which websites serve as sources and whether its own website is among them. Of 4,000 answers, 3,744 could be evaluated; the rest failed because one system intermittently did not respond.

  6. 6

    Sources and company size

The 420 most frequent source websites were classified individually, the rest extrapolated from a random sample of 200 citations. A corporation is a company with more than 1,000 employees or one that belongs to a group, based on public information.

Honesty before effect

Limitations

An analysis is only as credible as the limits it names itself.

  • Not a random sample: the results hold for these 100 companies, not for "the IT industry" as a whole.
  • A snapshot: AI answers vary from day to day and model updates can shift mentions. There is one answer per question and system.
  • Only competitors from each company's pre-defined peer set are counted — the number of answers naming competitors is therefore more likely too low than too high. A mention is not always a recommendation.
  • The shares of source types are rounded and may differ by a few percentage points.
  • Gemini answered only 17 times for IT security and cloud; that single value is not reliable and is not shown.
  • The comparison with the KI-Blindtest Mittelstand 2026 is only partly possible: there, ChatGPT answered without web search, Google AI Overviews were measured instead of AI Mode, and the models were older. The direction is robust; read the gap as an order of magnitude only.
  • The study measures the German-speaking market in German. AI systems work the same way elsewhere, but we have not measured other markets — so we do not claim them.

FAQ

Is the AI Blind Test B2B Tech 2026 representative of the IT industry?

No, and we do not claim it is. The 100 companies come from association, label and partner directories and have 20 to 1,000 employees. The results hold for these companies. The direction matches the KI-Blindtest Mittelstand 2026 with 449 companies.

Why were the AI systems queried with web search?

Because that is how buyers use them: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode usually search the web before answering purchase questions. This also shows which sources the systems rely on.

Why do system integrators and IT service providers do so badly?

The data shows a correlation: their websites are a source in only 3% of answers, compared with 15% for software vendors. Where an integrator has a page that answers the concrete customer question, it gets recommended — even against corporations. The measurement does not prove a cause in the strict sense.

Are the names of the companies examined published?

No. Only aggregated figures are published. Individual results are company-specific and go only to the company concerned if it asks for an analysis.

Can I have the visibility of my IT company checked?

Yes. Using the same method we create an analysis for your company — with your buyer questions, the real AI answers and the competitors named instead of you. Enter your domain on this page.

30 minutes, one clear finding.

No sales pitch: we show you whether AI puts your company on the shortlist — and the two or three levers that work fastest for you.
