Google AI Mode is a mode of Google Search that answers a question with a written response rather than a list of results. The answer links to its sources, and users can ask follow-up questions in the same conversation. Google calls it its “most powerful AI search” (Google, May 2026).
Since when has Google AI Mode existed?
Google introduced AI Mode in March 2025 as an experiment in Search Labs, initially for Google One AI Premium subscribers. On 20 May 2025 it began rolling out to all users in the US (Google, May 2025). On 8 October 2025 it launched in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as part of an expansion to 36 new languages and more than 40 countries (Google, October 2025).
Usage is growing fast. At Google I/O in May 2026, Google reported more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode.
How does Google AI Mode work?
AI Mode works with query fan-out. The system breaks the question into subtopics and issues many related searches at the same time. A Gemini model then combines the results into one answer (Google, March 2025). For the Deep Search feature, Google speaks of “hundreds” of searches per research task (Google, May 2025).
The sources come from the Google index. According to Google, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear in the generative AI features of Search (Google Search Central, 2026). This is grounding against the existing index, not a live fetch of your page.
Two features set the mode apart from classic search: the conversation history and the length of the questions. Follow-up questions build on the previous answer. According to Google, questions in AI Mode are two to three times as long as typical searches (Google, October 2025).
Personalisation comes on top. Google is expanding “Personal Intelligence” in AI Mode to nearly 200 countries and 98 languages (Google I/O, May 2026). The feature connects Google services such as Gmail with Search. In tests by iPullRank, AI Mode based recommendations on the account’s search history and emails (iPullRank, June 2026). Two people asking the same question can therefore receive different citations, says Mike King (iPullRank, September 2026).
How does AI Mode differ from AI Overviews?
AI Overviews appear as a block on the normal results page and summarise the essentials. AI Mode is a separate space for questions that, in Google’s words, need further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons. Google itself states that the two features may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links they show will vary (Google Search Central).
| Feature | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | block on the results page | separate mode with conversation history |
| Sources cited per answer (Profound, July 2026) | 11.1 | 15.2 |
| Share of citations going to google.com (BrightEdge, August 2026) | 9.9% | 44.9% |
The differences also show in the sources. Only 13.7% of cited URLs overlap between the two features, even though the answers reach the same conclusions in 86% of cases (Ahrefs, May 2026). All three figures come from studies by tool vendors. They point in the same direction: being cited in AI Overviews does not mean being cited in AI Mode.
Why does Google AI Mode matter for AI visibility?
In AI Mode, the choice is made in the answer, not on the results page. In studies by Kevin Indig, US adults accepted AI Mode’s product recommendation as the best option in 88% of cases (Growth Memo, July 2026). Whoever is missing from the answer is not compared at all, which sharpens the zero-click effect.
One finding by BrightEdge is relevant for B2B companies. The high google.com share arises mainly in ecommerce and travel, where Google cites its own product and pricing modules. For B2B topics, answers rely more heavily on external sources (BrightEdge, September 2026). That leaves more room for your content.
What does this mean for your website?
Because AI Mode asks many sub-questions, rankings for the fan-out queries count, not just for the main keyword. Cover the related questions in your field (query coverage) and answer each one in its own clearly structured section.
According to Google, no special technique is needed. Indexability, snippet eligibility and content in text form remain the foundation.
Measure AI Mode separately from AI Overviews. Build a prompt set from real customer questions and run it several times, because personalisation and changing sources distort single runs. Search Console adds impressions, but it does not show which questions you are cited for.
