AI Overviews are summaries that Google generates with generative AI and shows on the search results page. They answer a question in a few paragraphs and link to the pages the answer draws on. Google only shows them when its systems consider them helpful. The official German name is “Übersicht mit KI”.
Since when have AI Overviews existed?
Google launched AI Overviews for all users in the US on 14 May 2024 (Google, May 2024). In Germany they have appeared since 26 March 2025, initially for signed-in users aged 18 and over, in German and English (Google, March 2025). In July 2025, Google reported more than two billion monthly users in over 200 countries and 40 languages.
How do AI Overviews work?
AI Overviews draw on the existing Google index. According to Google, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to qualify as a source (Google Search Central, 2026). Like Google AI Mode, the feature can use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics. The result is grounding against the index, not a live fetch of your page.
SISTRIX has measured where and how often they appear in Germany. AI Overviews show up for just over 20% of keywords and for around 30% in the long tail. 78.6% sit above the organic results (SISTRIX, February 2026).
The sources change frequently. Ahrefs tracked 43,000 keywords over a month: between two observations, 45.5% of the cited sources were entirely new (Ahrefs, May 2026). A single check therefore tells you little.
How do AI Overviews relate to organic results?
A good ranking helps but does not guarantee a citation. In an analysis of 863,000 results pages, 37.9% of the URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared among the first ten results. Around 31% sat beyond the top 100 (Ahrefs, March 2026). An earlier Ahrefs study had found 76% in the top 10.
There are several measurements of the click-through rate. All of them come from tool vendors or agencies:
| Source | Finding |
|---|---|
| SISTRIX, February 2026 (Germany) | CTR at position 1 falls from over 27% to 11% with an AI Overview |
| SISTRIX, February 2026 (Germany) | around 6.6% of all organic clicks are lost, around 265 million per month |
| Ahrefs, February 2026 (data from December 2025) | 58% lower CTR for the top-ranked page |
| Seer Interactive, April 2026 | brands cited in the AI Overview get 120% more clicks per impression than uncited ones, but 38% fewer than on queries without an AI Overview |
Google itself stresses the quality of the clicks: according to Google, users who click from results pages with AI Overviews are more likely to spend more time on the site (Google Search Central).
Why do AI Overviews matter for AI visibility?
AI Overviews are the AI feature with the widest reach in Google Search. They usually sit above the organic results and answer the question before a click is needed. That is the core of the zero-click problem.
The Seer Interactive figures show where the lever lies: on a results page with an AI Overview, being cited is the main difference between you and your competitors. Informational queries are hit hardest. According to Seer Interactive, 36% of them show an AI Overview, compared with only 5% of transactional queries (April 2026).
What does this mean for your website?
First, check which of your pages are affected. Going by the figures above, guides, specialist articles and explainer pages are more exposed than product and contact pages. For them, what counts is whether they are cited as a source.
The metric for this is the AI Overview citation rate. Search Console reports impressions from AI Overviews in its generative AI report but shows no clicks (Search Engine Journal, September 2026). Add your own measurements with a fixed set of questions and several runs.
On the content side: answer the question in the first sentence of a section, stick to one topic per paragraph and back up figures with sources. According to Google, no dedicated AI markup or special schema is required.
